Expulsion of 415 Palestinians

Share

Thank you for the informative Opinion article by Yossi Melman (“Hamas: When a Former Client Becomes an Implacable Enemy,” Dec. 20). The Hamas ideology excludes the possibility of a Jewish state in Israel and its charter, published on Aug. 18, 1988, states that “the liberation of all of Palestine from the sea to the river is the most revered strategic goal.”

From Israel’s perspective, the temporary deportations of 415 members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as reaffirmed by the Supreme Court of Israel, was an appropriate response. The alternative was to allow these groups to continue their campaign of terror and murder against Israel’s Jewish citizens and innocent Palestinians.

The murder of Nissim Toledano for which Hamas claims responsibility was the final straw and catalyst for the action Israel has taken against Hamas. It has nothing to do with the peace talks. Hamas sees the land they call Palestine as a Wakf (Muslim holy property) that must remain Muslim forever. Hamas does not support negotiating with Israel and has declared its intention to thwart the peace talks.

Today we are witnesses to the dangers of increasing militancy around the world; in Egypt, in Bosnia, in India, and yes, in Israel. Those who crack down on the instigators of terrorism do not hinder peace; they are attempting to keep their citizens safe. No country, including Israel, should be expected to do less.
