Parliament May Be Asked to Let Charles Rewed
British Prime Minister John Major is ready to ask Parliament to change the law so that Prince Charles could remarry in the Church of England if he divorced his estranged wife, Princess Diana, the Daily Express said today.
The newspaper said Major is in sympathy with Queen Elizabeth II’s desire to scrap an ancient act which prevents the Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual head of the Church of England, from issuing a marriage license to any members of the Royal Family in such circumstances.
Changing the law now would avoid conflict when the heir to the throne eventually succeeds his mother to become not only king but also supreme governor of the church.
It would also let his younger brother, Prince Andrew, marry in the Church of England if he were to divorce his estranged wife, the Duchess of York.
The Express said the issue has been discussed by Major and the queen in their private meetings.
