Nichols Institute said founder Dr. Albert D. Nichols, 58, resigned as president and chief executive. Nichols will continue as chairman of the medical testing company.

Chief Financial Officer Paul Bellamy was named interim president. The San Juan Capistrano-based company said it is looking for a new CEO with experience in the health care industry.

Nichols will work on long-range planning in anticipation of significant changes in the health care industry, the company said.

When Bellamy and two other executives were hired in November, Nichols said they would provide leadership in the company’s effort to revitalize itself.
