Compton : City Hall Campaigning Ordinance Struck Down

Share

An ordinance designed to keep political campaigning out of City Hall was struck down this week by a Superior Court judge who said the law was overly broad.

The ordinance, passed in May during a contentious campaign, forbade anyone to distribute or even to carry political literature on city property, including sidewalks and parks, said City Atty. Wesley Fenderson. The law was challenged by attorney B. Kwaku Duren, a former candidate for the 37th Congressional District, after he was nearly arrested for passing out campaign flyers during a City Council meeting.

The decision was based on a technicality, Fenderson said, and a new ordinance will be presented to the council after the New Year’s holiday. The new ordinance will prohibit political signs and literature in City Hall and the council chambers.
