LANCASTER : Antelope Valley Escapes Prison Name
It hasn’t even opened yet, but the new $207-million state prison in Lancaster is already getting a name change, to the delight of local officials in the Antelope Valley.
The state Department of Corrections was preparing Wednesday to rename the facility “California State Prison--Los Angeles County” after the County Board of Supervisors voted 3 to 0 Tuesday to support the change.
The prison, expected to house nearly 4,000 inmates, is due to open Feb. 1.
Earlier this year, the county board had recommended, and state corrections officials accepted, the original name of “California State Prison--Antelope Valley.” But local officials protested, saying they didn’t want the name of their region on a prison.
