President-elect Bill Clinton marked his New Year’s holiday with an early morning run on the beach, a golf game and some televised football.

Even though he stayed up until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, according to aides, Clinton was up and on the beach of this exclusive resort island at 7 a.m. for a three-mile run.

He later played 18 holes of golf on the Robert Trent Jones course, one of 25 on the island. His partners included economist Michael Porter and former Kentucky Gov. John Y. Brown.

Island residents and tourists tied up the resort’s main highway as they stopped to watch Clinton play on the nearby course. They gave polite applause to some of his better shots.

Clinton is in Hilton Head to attend the Renaissance weekend, which brings together notable figures from a wide range of backgrounds.

As he has done for the last eight years, Clinton rang in the New Year with his fellow participants, but he declined an invitation to play his saxophone with the band.

Clinton is due to leave Sunday.
