* * * “Dizzy,” edited by Lee Tanner, Pomegranate ($25). This excellent photo tribute to the late stellar trumpeter and jazz ambassador Dizzy Gillespie is unique, particularly because many of the pictures are not of the honoree, but of other jazz artists on whom he had a significant impact. Among these are Count Basie, James Moody, Thelonious Monk and Hampton Hawes. Each of the photos--many of them classics by such notables as Herman Leonard, William Gottlieb and Charles Stewart, though newer names such as Jeff Sedlik are present--is accompanied by a brief anecdote or statement about Gillespie. Many of these snippets are by Gillespie himself. A winsome essay, taken from the Gene Lees’ book of the same name, is happily included.

Items in this periodic survey of jazz-related books, videocassettes and laser discs are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent).
