BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Oilers Go Outside, Open Up Victory Over Ocean View

Share

Huntington Beach cracked open Ocean View’s zone defense in the third quarter with the three-point shooting of guards Bryan Chang and Tommy Walden, and the Oilers breezed to a 63-46 Sunset League victory Saturday night at Huntington Beach High.

Walden hit a pair of three-pointers, and Chang added another to ignite the Oiler offense, which sputtered in the first half. Huntington Beach (13-3, 3-0 in league) led, 23-19, after two quarters.

“We made an adjustment in our zone offense at halftime and starting going to cross-court passing to get their zone to shift and cover a lot of ground,” Oiler Coach Roy Miller said.

After Chang and Walden stretched the Seahawk zone, Huntington Beach big men Tony Gonzalez and Matt Ambrose went to work. The Oilers went on a 13-4 run in the third quarter, taking a 39-28 lead on Gonzalez’s basket with 3:02 left in the third.

Ocean View (6-6, 2-1) took a beating on the backboards, the Oilers dominating, 37-19, in rebounding. Ambrose and Gonzalez led the effort with 13 and 11.

Gonzalez led Huntington Beach in scoring with 15. Jim Harris and Mike Randall scored 13 each for Ocean View.
