VW Confirms Plan to Cut 30,000 Jobs: Volkswagen, Europe’s largest auto maker, confirmed that it will cut about 30,000 jobs worldwide by 1994 and set up a new five-year investment plan. Asked whether the German manufacturer was planning to cut its global work force by 30,000 as reported, VW spokesman Ortwin Witzel said a figure of “this magnitude is not quite wrong.” Witzel said the figure of 30,000 is a broad target set by Volkswagen. VW has a global work force of 273,000.
