In response to “Anyone for a Degree in Failure?” by Jehan Abdel-Gawad, Commentary, Jan. 10:

Ms. Abdel-Gawad is clearly articulate, intelligent, and has a right to be disappointed that she cannot find a job. However, the problem is not George Bush, but her choice of major. Her degree in political science has overqualified her for clerical positions but not prepared her for a “sustenance-paying, intellect-challenging” job in today’s globally competitive environment. This is a harsh question, but who is Ms. Abdel-Gawad marketable to?

Any cursory glance at in-demand occupations would show opportunity in fields such as health-care, engineering, science, accounting, marketing, banking, finance and computers. In the Jan. 11 Times Classified section, I do not see one job opportunity for a political analyst.

If Ms. Abdel-Gawad is waiting for the man from Hope to change the job market, I am afraid she will be disappointed.
