W e need to be more sensitive to the educational needs of gays and lesbi ans because there are certain issues and lifestyles that are unique to them. This kind of institution will not compromise on education for students who are gay and lesbian.

Some in the African-American community are still responding with fear and homophobia any time a gay or lesbian issue arises. I’m sure there may be some in the African-American community who will let fear dictate their reactions to this new school. They will probably say there isn’t a need for this kind of institution. However, I think this institute can be a model for those in Latino, Asian-American and African-American communities interested in creating their own types of high-level academic institutions.
