I think the institute is important because there is a heterosexual assumption about everything. Gays and lesbians are ignored or there is a heterosexual point of view in all classrooms. Many people act as if gays and lesbians don’t exist--or they are insulting toward gays and lesbians in class.

One of the purposes of the institute is to provide an opportunity for an environment that is comfortable for gays and lesbians--a place where they can speak and not be left out or insulted all the time.

I’m taking the Homosexual Ethics course at the institute. The class focuses on how people look at homosexuals and at ethical arguments relating to homosexuality. There is no other place in which I could discuss such matters without feeling defensive.

The institute welcomes straight people to attend and to work as faculty members. But the primary purpose of the institute is to provide a comfortable intellectual base for gays and lesbians. The institute can benefit society because any time you have an oppressed group trying to improve its self-image, it’s good for society as a whole.
