Japanese Firm Stops Making VCRs: Electronics maker NEC said it has stopped making videocassette recorders, the first Japanese firm to abandon the product. “The audio-visual business is terrible now and with all the competition around we can’t make a profit in VCRs,” said Hideki Ajima, a spokesman for NEC Home Electronics in Tokyo, the consumer arm of NEC Corp. Japanese firms made 7.16 million VCRs in 1988 but only 3.9 million in the first 11 months of 1992. NEC Home Electronics is now buying video recorders from Sanyo and sticking the NEC label on them to supply its chain of retail stores.
