Korean Leader’s Daughter Pleads Guilty
The daughter and son-in-law of South Korean President Roh Tae Woo pleaded guilty Wednesday to misrepresenting cash transactions, U.S. Atty. John Mendez announced.
Roh’s daughter, Soh Yeong Chey, and her husband, Tae Won Chey, admitted a felony charge of concealing a cash deposit of over $10,000 by breaking it into deposits smaller than $10,000, Mendez said. Banks are required to report cash deposits above $10,000 to the federal government.
Assistant U.S. Atty. Matthew Pavone at first said the couple had brought the money into the United States, but later said he had been wrong and that prosecutors did not know how the money had gotten into the country.
He declined to say how much money was involved or whether the source was known.
Mendez said the Cheys have agreed to forfeit $192,576.89 and pay fines of $30,000 each. He said prosecutors would recommend that U.S. District Judge James Ware grant probation rather than sentencing the couple to prison.
