A Massachusetts congressman praised Turkish President Turgut Ozal on Wednesday for agreeing to keep his nation’s borders open to humanitarian aid for embattled Armenia.

Rep. Joseph Kennedy (D-Mass.) met with Ozal late Tuesday in Cambridge. He said Ozal also assured him of Turkey’s cooperation in delivering oil to landlocked Armenia.

“President Ozal deserves much credit for his willingness to open Turkey’s border to allow unlimited access for humanitarian aid at this critical time for the people of Armenia,” Kennedy said in a statement.

Turkish Embassy spokesman Tacan Ildem said he could not confirm that any new arrangement has been made to allow oil shipments into Armenia from Turkey. But he said it has been a longstanding Turkish policy to allow humanitarian aid across its border with Armenia.

Turkey recently shipped 200,000 tons of grain to Armenia, hurt by its conflict with Azerbaijan.
