STOCKTON — Pacific ended a 26-game losing streak to Nevada Las Vegas on Thursday night as Michael Jackson scored a career-high 19 points and made three of four free throws in the final 1:13 in a 62-56 upset of the 10th-ranked Rebels.
The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for UNLV (13-2, 6-2 Big West), which was held to its lowest point total of the season. The Rebels, who shot 39% from the field, had not lost to the Tigers since Jan. 3, 1972.
The Tigers (10-8, 6-4) took a 57-52 lead with 1:46 left on a free throw by Chuck Terrell before Lawrence Thomas’ basket ended a 5:08 scoring drought for UNLV.
The Rebels were forced to foul down the stretch and sent Jackson to the line, where he made it 58-54 before J.R. Rider scored to cut the lead to two with 1:03 left.
After being fouled by Dexter Boney, Jackson sealed the victory by making two free throws with 26 seconds remaining. Robert Richardson’s uncontested dunk ended the game, after which the sellout crowd mobbed the players on the court.
The game was played before 6,150, the largest crowd in the history of the 12-year-old Spanos Center.
