Bruny Surin of Canada beat five American sprinters in winning the 60-meter dash in 6.54 seconds at an indoor track and field meet at Stuttgart, Germany.
American Calvin Smith was second in 6.64. Dennis Mitchell, the Olympic 100-meter bronze medalist, was third again in 6.65.
James Trapp tied for first with fellow American Michael Bates in the 200 in 20.83. Michael Johnson ran his fastest 400 meters of the indoor season, winning in 45.75.
