Authentic Fitness Profit Doubles in 2nd Quarter

Authentic Fitness Corp., the Van Nuys maker of Speedo and White Stag athletic clothing, said its fiscal second-quarter net income more than doubled from a year earlier, to $2.7 million from $1.1 million.

The increase in profit for the quarter ended Jan. 3 came on a 26% increase in revenue, to $29 million from $23 million a year earlier. The company said sales increased in all operating units, and it reported strong performance in its recently launched retail store operation in Los Angeles.

After adjustments for the company’s initial public offering in June, Authentic Fitness’ earnings on what’s called a pro forma basis rose 25% from a year earlier, to $2.5 million from $2 million.

For the six months that ended Jan. 3, the company’s profit tripled, to $4.3 million from $1 million in the comparable period a year earlier. On a pro-forma basis, earnings increased to $3.8 million from $2.8 million.

The company’s revenue during the six months ended Jan. 3 rose 32%, to $52.9 million from $40.1 million a year earlier.
