Ice Jam Breaks, Spares Towns on St. Lawrence

MONTREAL —
An ice jam caused the St. Lawrence River to rise 10 feet, but five river communities were spared flooding when the waters receded Wednesday, officials said.
The ice jam 25 miles downstream from Montreal had blocked the river since last Thursday but began moving downstream Wednesday, coast guard spokesman Richard Lessard said.
