World IN BRIEF : ISRAEL : 1 Arab-American of 3 Wins Freedom
An Arab-American detained by the Israeli military was released. Mohammed Haja, who had been suspected of arranging the transfer of arms to the militant Palestinian group Hamas, accused his interrogators of beating him during his nearly three weeks of confinement. The army declined to respond to the charge. Haja, 32, formerly of Richmond, Va., denied any connection with Hamas. Two other Arab-Americans from the Chicago area, Mohammed Salah, 39, and Mohammed Jarad, 36, remained in custody. Following U.S. complaints, the two were allowed to consult lawyers, an Israeli official said.
