Opera Pacific will stage its first Wagnerian opera as one of four works in its 1993-94 season at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. These will be in addition to a previously announced cooperative venture in zarzuela with Los Angeles Music Center Opera.

The company’s eighth season begins Sept. 11 with Gounod’s “Faust” (though Sept. 19). It will be followed by Lehar’s “The Merry Widow” (Jan. 21-30), Wagner’s “Die Walkure” (March 4-20, 1994) and Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” (March 9-19, 1994).

One performance of the zarzuela, Manuel Panella’s “El Gato Montes,” will be presented Jan. 15 in Costa Mesa with a cast that includes tenor Placido Domingo. The production, which also will use the center for rehearsals, will move on for six performances Jan. 19-29 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.

The new “Faust” will be designed by Paul Steinberg, who designed the Christopher Alden production of Hans Werner Henze’s “Das Verratene Meer” for San Francisco Opera in 1991.

Vinson Cole will sing Faust. Sheryl Woods will be Marguerite. Eric Halfvarson will sing Mephistopheles. Paula Rasmussen and Yalun Zhang will be Siebel and Valentine, respectively. A complete alternate cast will be announced. John DeMain will conduct. Ken Cazan will be the stage director.

The “Widow” production was created for Washington Opera in 1984 by Zack Brown. Roberta Peters will sing the title role. Ron Raines will be Danilo. Dorothy Danner will be the stage director. A conductor will be named. No alternate cast is planned. Lehar’s opera was staged in 1989 at the center by New York City Opera.

The “Walkure” production was created by Dallas Opera in 1981. Ealynn Voss, who sang Puccini’s Turandot for Opera Pacific in 1990, will be Brunnhilde. Mechtild Gessendorf will sing Sieglinde; John Keyes will be Siegmund. Victor von Halem will be Wotan. John Mauceri will conduct. Robert Oswald will be stage director. There will be no alternate cast. It will be Opera Pacific’s first attempt at the heavyweight Germanic repertory.

Ruth Ann Swenson will sing the title role in “Lucia di Lammermoor,” in a production to be named. Cesar Hernandez will be Edgardo; Mark Rucker will sing Enrico. The conductor and stage director will be named.
