Share

The Assn. of Black Women Entrepreneurs has awarded its annual scholarship to Manual Arts High School senior Jacqueline Lopez.

Lopez, who plans to major in biology, is the second recipient of the association’s scholarship.

The scholarship amount is based on the cost of the college or university the recipient chooses to attend, said association President Dolores Ratcliffe. Lopez has not decided which college or university she will attend.

The female scholarship recipient is selected by college counselors based on several factors including academic achievement, character and financial need.

The scholarship was announced at a recent reception that also honored 10 businessmen who spoke about the black economic agenda for 1993. Honorees included: Gregory Burks, director of the Angeles Mesa YMCA; Paul Hudson, president of the Broadway Savings & Loan; Gene Hale, founder of the African-American Chamber of Commerce, and Carlton Jenkins, director of Founders National Bank.

The Assn. of Black Women Entrepreneurs Inc., founded in 1984, targets women in providing business and educational support, though the group also serves men.
