Impact of NAFTA on Exports Downplayed: In findings that could help ease Asia’s fears over the effect of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Philippines has said the plan would do little harm to its exports to the United States. Trade and Industry Secretary Rizalino Navarro said an extensive government study found that most Philippine exports to the United States would remain cheaper than similar goods produced under NAFTA in Mexico. Although it covers only Philippine-produced goods, the study could go a long way to help ease regional concerns over NAFTA because many Asian countries export a number of similar products.
