Bombing of Dresden

Share

The good burghers of Dresden decry that their once beautiful city was destroyed in World War II. They seem to be blaming the wrong people for that war, True, Britain bombed Dresden to smithereens, but that is the tragic and bitter fruit of war.

As the good citizens there hold up placards, with the dates of Feb. 13-14, 1945, to shame the visiting Queen of England, I am reminded of those dates for another reason: I saw a new war widow’s tears flow as she read the dreaded words of the telegram: “The War Department regrets to inform you. . . .”

Dresden has no exclusive on the suffering of the innocent, even 50 years later.
