NATION IN BRIEF : NEW HAMPSHIRE : Pamela Smart’s Appeal Is Rejected

The New Hampshire Supreme Court upheld the murder conviction of Pamela Smart, a former high school teacher serving a life sentence without parole for coercing her teen-age boyfriend to murder her husband in 1990. Smart’s lawyer, J. Albert Johnson contended that Smart was denied a fair trial because of intense pretrial publicity from which Judge Douglas Gray did not sufficiently shield jurors.
