Devers Sets U.S. Indoor Record

Gail Devers set an American indoor record of 6.99 seconds for the 60-meter dash Friday night at the Mobil Indoor Championships at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Devers, the Olympic 100-meter gold medalist at Barcelona, also set an American record of 6.10 for 50 meters at the Sunkist Invitational last Saturday.

In other events, Lance Deal broke his world indoor record in the 35-pound weight throw for the second time this year with a toss of 81 feet 6 inches at Princeton University. On his final attempt, Deal broke his previous record of 81-5 1/4 set Feb. 5 at Manhattan College during the Millrose Games.

Other winners included: Tony Dees in the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 7.52; Noureddine Morceli of Algeria in the open mile in 3:54.61; Eamonn Coghlan in the Masters Mile in 4:01.39; Jim Doehring in the shot put with a throw of 70-9; Connie Price-Smith in the women’s shot put at 59-9 1/2; Sheila Hudson in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 44-3 1/4, and Tyrone Scott in the men’s triple jump at 54-5.

The first two finishers in nearly all the events at the national championships qualify for the World Championships at Toronto next month. Randy Barnes, the world indoor and outdoor record-holder in the shotput, finished third. Barnes returned to competition at the Sunkist meet after a two-year drug suspension.
