An empty Danish oil tanker ran onto rocks off the northeast coast of England in severe weather Sunday, the coast guard said. A helicopter lifted nine of the 21 crew members to safety.

A coast guard spokesman said the master of the Freja Svea was keeping the 12 remaining crew aboard to help with an eventual effort to get the vessel off Redcar Rocks, half a mile off the coast and 200 miles north of London.
