CASTAIC : Pitchess Escapee Quickly Recaptured
A 20-year-old inmate escaped from a county jail in Castaic on Monday and was recaptured a few miles away, authorities said.
Douglas Opett was being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, authorities said.
Opett, a minimum-security inmate, walked away from a work detail at the Pitchess Honor Rancho at 9 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Rich Erickson.
He was recaptured 2 1/2 hours later by a California Highway Patrol officer who saw him walking at Parker Road and the Golden State Freeway, a few miles from the jail, Erickson said.
Opett was serving time for auto theft and was due to be released in September.
