The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the state’s newly activated law banning assisted suicide.

The suit was filed by the ACLU of Michigan on behalf of two terminally ill cancer patients and seven local doctors. It asks the Wayne County Circuit Court to declare the law unconstitutional as a violation of personal freedoms.

The plaintiffs argue that the assisted-suicide law violates due-process clauses of the Michigan and U.S. constitutions, in addition to the general right of privacy recognized in the Michigan Constitution.
