HEAL THE LAND: UCI biologist Lynn Carpenter is doing more than fret about disappearing rain forests. She’s bought 63 overgrazed acres in Costa Rica to restore with native forest plants and food crops. . . . She leaves for Costa Rica Sunday to join a slew of UCI volunteers. “It’s been absolutely magical,” she says. “They’ve already gone down and built a tree nursery . . . so we’ll be ready to go as soon as we collect the seeds.”
