Parents Not at Fault in Death

I was outraged by Todd Bernstein’s letter to the Editor (“Flood Channel Dangers,” Times Valley Edition, Feb. 28).

I understand that Bernstein is entitled to his opinion regarding the Bischoffs’ decision to include the property owners in their lawsuit. What I do not understand is Bernstein’s utter cruelty and complete insensitivity in suggesting that this tragic accident could have been avoided if the parents had been more vigilant about educating their son about the flood channels. They did, in fact, warn him two nights before the accident.

I am a close neighbor and a close friend of the Bischoffs and watched Adam grow up from my front window. He was as special as the things written about him say he was.

Marilyn and Dave Bischoff were and are exemplary parents. They do all of the things that you and I do to keep our beloved children healthy and safe. Aside from losing Adam, the most devastating blow from this accident for me has been the realization that, even when we do everything we can for our children, ultimately we cannot completely protect them from the outside world and all of its dangers.

It’s truly unfortunate that Bernstein could have not expressed his views about the lawsuit without deeply hurting a devastated family that is still struggling to survive their loss.
