Gerald A. Sampson, a retailing executive who spent much of his career with May Department Stores, has been named president and chief operating officer of Dallas-based Neiman Marcus.

Sampson, 51, will report to Neiman Marcus Chairman Terry J. Lundgren, who remains Neiman Marcus’ chief executive.

Sampson resigned last month as chairman of the newly merged Robinsons-May department store chain. St. Louis-based May Department Stores officially merged its May Co. store chain with Robinson’s on Feb. 1.

Before the Robinsons-May Co. merger, Sampson was chairman of May Co. California, a post he assumed in 1991.

Sampson had been with May Co. for 18 years, starting as a divisional vice president and controller of Hecht’s. From 1987 to 1991, he served as chairman of Pittsburgh-based Kaufmann’s, another May division.

In his new post, Sampson will supervise information services, expansion, distribution and the financial division.
