MCI Communications Inc. on Monday unveiled the first-ever international personal 800 telephone service, introducing “Servicio Llamame” between Mexico and the United States.

The program, whose name means “call me” in Spanish, is aimed at U.S. residents with friends and relatives in Mexico who frequently call north collect. Under the new service, charges for calls from Mexico will automatically be billed to the recipient at rates a minimum of 18% below those for collect calls.

The plan recognizes the growing phone traffic between the United States and Mexico and attempts to make international calling easier, particularly for Mexican families relying on pay telephones to place calls to the United States.

Servicio Llamame customers are given a special four-digit code that they may pass out to callers in Mexico, who then dial a toll-free number, wait for a recording and then enter the code. Calls from northern Mexico are billed at 75 cents per minute, while calls from the southern half of the country cost $1.70 per minute. U.S. subscribers also pay a $5 monthly fee for the service.
