Elizabeth Lu’s description of life in Singapore reminded me of my visit during their very beautiful annual (early August) nationalistic celebration of Singapore’s independence from Great Britain. I should have known this country/city would be quite exceptional. Prior to arriving at Singapore’s world-class airport, each passenger was issued a landing card to complete. It included a red-stamped warning on the landing card: “The possession of illegal drugs is punishable by death.”
I imagine along with the Singaporean affinity for cleanliness and the existence of a population of multicultural residents who seem to live together harmoniously, they have also discovered the only expedient method to truly curtail drug abuse. I, for one, was impressed.
