Countywide : Essay Competition Open to Students

Orange County high school seniors are invited to compete in the Americanism Educational League’s annual Patriotic Slogan/Essay contests, in which $3,650 in prizes will be awarded to winners.

The league’s contest topic this year is “Case Histories of Drug Misuse.” Maximum length for the essays is 300 words.

The top three slogan writers will receive scholarship checks for $650, $450 and $300, respectively.

Cash awards ranging from $50 to $250 will be awarded to 17 additional winners.

The annual Trustees’ Trophy and the Freedom Center Volunteers’ Trophy will also be awarded.

In the essay contest, first prize carries an award of $300. In all, seven students will receive awards. The best essays will be published in a brochure to be circulated nationally.

Deadline for entries is April 23. The presentation of checks to the winners will be held May 19 at Knott’s Berry Farm’s Independence Hall in Buena Park.

Last year, students from 55 public, private, parochial and continuation schools entered slogans, said Stephen R. Knott, league trustee and chairman of the project.

Knott is the grandson of Knott’s Berry Farm founder Walter Knott, who initiated the league’s patriotic slogan contest in 1971.
