In response to “Education for All,” Platform, March 7:

When the LEARN (Los Angeles Educational Alliance for Restructuring Now) document to improve Los Angeles schools was initially printed, no mention was made of students with disabilities. This caused considerable concern throughout the special education community. Mike Roos, LEARN president, and the LEARN trustees have now agreed to include students with disabilities in their school reform package.

Since the document had already been printed, the revised language to include students with disabilities will be submitted as an addendum when the proposal is presented to the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Board of Education. In addition, the next printing of the LEARN document will include agreed upon revisions.

We feel that the LEARN proposal has the potential to dramatically alter and improve education in the Los Angeles Unified School District. It is vital that students with disabilities, like their non-handicapped peers, be considered in any action related to reform.
