It is my impression that the office of schools chief is nonpartisan. While this may be largely symbolic, it is my impression that state Sen. Bergeson’s political philosophy is far to the conservative side. Since she has already supported a drop in the per-pupil funding, and since you label any further per-pupil funding reduction as disastrous, why do you think she is the best qualified candidate (editorial, March 4)? If “ . . . for now, Bergeson is a fine choice,” why is she the best choice for tomorrow?

If you read your editorial, you will find the best arguments not to support the nomination, independently of Assembly Speaker Willie Brown’s “darn hatchet.” Your confused logic continues to puzzle me.
