Seven checks totaling $107,602.56 have been presented to Burbank, representing the city’s share of assets seized as a result of drug prosecutions.

“This goes in the bank,” said Police Chief David Newsham. “As we go along and identify needs we have, we’ll use it.”

With this most recent deposit, the Burbank Police Department has received more than $7 million in seized drug assets since it joined the Drug Asset Forfeiture program in 1986.

Most of the money, distributed by state and federal agencies, including the Justice and Treasury departments, and the Drug Enforcement Agency, dates from drug cases the Burbank Police Department participated in two to four years ago, Newsham said.

The department, which has an annual budget of about $21 million, has used the money to purchase a helicopter and equip the department of 145 police officers with bulletproof vests.

Funding from the program also will pay for special training for three police officers in drug investigation.
