CAMARILLO : Daughter in Beating Case Pleads Insanity

A Camarillo woman accused of beating and pouring boiling water on her elderly father because he was reading her magazine pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Friday.

Juletta Marie Madrid, 42, will be evaluated by two doctors to determine what her mental state was at the time of the crime. Superior Court Judge Charles W. Campbell scheduled an April 9 hearing to accept the doctors’ reports and decide how to proceed in the case.

Madrid is charged with six counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count each of inflicting injury on an elderly person and false imprisonment in the Feb. 10 attack on her father, Raul Madrid, 77.

She also is charged with assaulting and imprisoning her mother, Irene Madrid, who is in her 60s.

Police said Juletta Madrid struck her father with a shovel, rake and hammer before tossing boiling water on him. She is charged with holding a knife to her mother’s throat and threatening to kill her when Irene Madrid tried to leave the house.

Raul Madrid, who uses a walker to get around, was treated for cuts, burns and scrapes, police said.

Deputy Public Defender Robert K. Willey said Madrid has been treated by county mental health officials in the past, although he does not know what specific mental problems she has. The Feb. 10 incident alone justifies the insanity plea, Willey said.

The defense attorney said he hopes to settle the case before trial. Possible resolutions include an agreement by prosecutors that Madrid was insane at the time of the incident, or a decision by Madrid to plead guilty if the doctors conclude she was sane, Willey said.

If Madrid is found insane, she will be hospitalized in the state prison system, Willey said.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert D. Meyers said Madrid could be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison if she is convicted of assault, and the judge or jury concludes that she was sane when she attacked her parents.
