Mercedes Announces Assembly Plans: German car maker Mercedes-Benz confirmed that it plans to take up car assembly in the Philippines. “We’re interested and we are involved in talks with the government there,” a company spokesman said. Mercedes assembled a small number of cars for the local market in the Philippines up until 1980, when the import of cars and parts for cars with engines of 2 liters or more was forbidden by law, the spokesman said. “That law, which forced us to stop assembly at the time, has now been scrapped,” and Mercedes is interested in resuming assembly there, the spokesman said.
