BLOEMFONTEIN : Back to Court

Share

Winnie Mandela’s attorneys will try to overthrow her 1991 assault and kidnaping convictions when they begin oral arguments Wednesday before five judges of the Appeals Court, South Africa’s highest judicial body. Three days have been set aside for the arguments, and it is likely that the court will postpone judgment for at least several months.

Mandela, who is free on bail, has been sentenced to six years in prison in connection with the abduction of four young men who were taken to her Soweto home and assaulted. One later died of his injuries.

The state contends that the sentence imposed on Mandela was too lenient. Her defense lawyers plan to argue that the verdict was inconsistent with the evidence.
