A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

PALISADES BUSES: Approved spending $11,000 in state transit funds to continue to operate the DASH city bus shuttle service in the Palisades area for three months.

SHERATON TOWN HOUSE: Overruled the city Cultural Heritage Commission’s decision denying monument status to the Sheraton Town House on Wilshire Boulevard, and sent the issue of whether the building should be preserved to the Arts, Health and Humanities Committee for further review. The 63-year-old hotel closed last month, and its owner had started preliminary action to demolish it for a parking lot.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

MARCH: Approved waiving all city fees that will be incurred for a march Sunday to memorialize Allen Schindler, the gay sailor who was beaten to death while overseas in October, 1992. A shipmate of Schindler’s has been charged with murder in the case, which is being investigated as a possible gay-bashing incident. Certain streets will be closed starting at 11 a.m. Passed: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Michael Woo.

ABSENT: Galanter and Yaroslavsky.

FREEZE: Approved a city policy that the council not make any permanent appointments in the next six months to fill vacancies that occur among the city’s upper management ranks. The measure’s proponents said it is necessitated by the election of a new mayor, the city’s budget crisis and a measure on the June 8 ballot to remove upper management jobs from civil service protection. Passed 10-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo.

TRAFFIC OFFICERS: Approved a proposal requesting that city officials investigate allowing organizers of special events, such as parades and marathons, to hire retired or off-duty police officers to direct traffic currently handled by city traffic control officers. Passed: 10-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Woo.

CATS AND DOGS: Approved a proposal allowing humane organizations to temporarily adopt--free of charge--impounded cats and dogs in city shelters that are to be euthanized. Passed: 10-0.
