Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian on Thursday after he stabbed and slightly wounded a soldier in Gaza City, the army and the state-owned radio reported.

The army said two Palestinian bystanders were wounded in the gunfire. One of them, a woman, was in serious condition, it said.

It was the latest in escalating Israeli-Arab violence that has killed at least 23 Palestinians and eight Israelis since the beginning of March.

Six of the Palestinian victims have been 12 years old or younger.

Also Thursday, a Jerusalem magistrates court ordered a Jewish settler held for 10 days on allegations that he fatally shot a Palestinian man who had been bound hand and foot by other settlers. The settlers said the victim had knifed one of them.

Yoram Shkolnik, 30, of the settlement of Maale Hever in the occupied West Bank, told police he shot the man “because the Arabs have to be taught a lesson,” Army Radio reported.

Shkolnik is accused of firing at least eight bullets from a submachine gun into the back of Musa Suleiman abu Sabha, 20, from the nearby village of Yatta, on Tuesday.

Moshe Mizrahi, deputy commander of the Hebron-area police, told army radio that police were seeking murder charges against Shkolnik.
