CAMARILLO : Study on Recycling Plant Proposal OKd
By a 2-1 vote, the Camarillo City Council has approved contributing toward a study of whether a large recycling plant proposed for Camarillo or one for Oxnard would best meet western Ventura County’s needs.
The council’s decision means Camarillo will join seven other cities in paying $8,000 each for an analysis of the competing recycling center proposals.
About 30 residents from the Acacia Street neighborhood directly across the Ventura Freeway from the site of the proposed Camarillo plant attended the meeting Tuesday.
Concerned about traffic problems from garbage and recycling trucks, residents urged the council to reject the study to send a message to the Ventura County Waste Commission that Camarillo does not want the proposed recycling center, which would be built by Gold Coast Recycling Inc.
The commission will decide between the Oxnard and Camarillo proposals.
Councilmen Ken Gose and David Smith supported the study, saying it will provide more information for city officials to decide on Gold Coast’s proposal.
Councilman Michael Morgan, however, dissented. He said the analysis may conclude that the proposed Camarillo recycling plant would work best for the west county.
