MISSION VIEJO : City OKs Funds for Recreation Centers

The City Council this week approved almost $260,000 in additional funds to run the city’s recreation centers through June 30.
A major part of the money will go to buy rather than lease fitness and computer equipment, said city officials.
The recommendation to buy the equipment came from Sports Leisure Group, which got the city contract in December to operate the centers. At the time, the sports management company estimated it would cost $1.24 million to run the Mission Viejo program and facilities for approximately six months.
Company officials said it made financial sense to purchase about $169,682 in equipment rather than lease it.
The council also approved:
* $20,645 to provide more lifeguards at swimming pools in the recreation complex. With more public liability exposure, the city has a need to provide lifeguards for the centers while they are open, city officials said.
* $51,000 for recreation and fitness programs
* $18,240 to upgrade outdoor lighting at the Marguerite Recreation Center.
The city took over the four recreation centers from the Mission Viejo Co. in December. The council hired Sports Leisure Group to operate the centers and start a vigorous campaign to attract members.
