NEW YORK — There were probably few people who were happier about Friday’s appointment of Louis Gerstner as the new chief executive at International Business Machines Corp. than the editors at Business Week.
Based on word from several sources, the magazine tore up its plans for the front cover last Wednesday and instead put a picture of Gerstner on the cover with the headline “IBM’s New Boss.”
“We weren’t very worried about it,” Managing Editor Mark Morrison said. “We were getting a lot of indications from IBM people that this was about to happen and that the final arrangements were being worked out.”
The article, which pointed out that the official announcement was still pending at the time, went to the printers Wednesday night and was mailed to subscribers Thursday.
What if Gerstner hadn’t gotten the job?
“I guess we were going to sit around with egg on our face,” Morrison said.
