U.N. Commission on El Salvador

We applaud your editorial (March 22) calling for the suspension of aid to El Salvador until that government implements the recommendations of the U.N. Truth Commission. We hope that Congress acts swiftly in that regard.
But the actions of our State Department and the Clinton Administration will also speak loudly when they offer a new ambassador to El Salvador for confirmation. Peter Romero, currently deputy chief of mission, with very little experience for such a sensitive post, is expected to be proposed as our ambassador.
Romero is said to have strong links to the Salvadoran military and political right and to be the chief apologist for President Cristiani’s failure to act upon the Truth Commission’s recommendations.
