Merger Activity Rises Slightly: The pace of mergers in the United States accelerated in the first quarter as 1,402 deals worth $25.1 billion were completed, a Wall Street research firm said. That was a 1% rise compared to last year, and, for the first time in three years, there were no hostile takeover bids, Securities Data Co. said. Goldman Sachs & Co. was the top adviser for transactions in the period, supplanting Credit Suisse’s First Boston Corp. Goldman had 30 deals with a value of $11.41 billion.
