Police Officers’ Perilous Task

Share

I deeply appreciate your story of March 18, “Volunteers Give L.A. Police Extra Eyes in the Night,” about citizens with binoculars, camcorders and radios who assist in the surveillance and capture of street criminals. It is gratifying to see concerned citizens helping to curb the increasingly common, in-your-face crimes of vandalism and graffiti.

Residents and merchants, after repeatedly repainting walls and replacing glass, have long felt helpless and frustrated in thwarting the criminal actions of vandals and graffiti taggers to the point of suggesting vigilantism. Trained police volunteers could prevent the situation from escalating to that level.
