3 U.N. Peacekeepers Killed in Cambodia

Three Bulgarian soldiers of the U.N. peacekeeping operation in Cambodia were killed and six wounded, two critically, in an overnight attack in the south of the country, a U.N. official said today.

The attack was the worst violence involving U.N. peacekeepers since the operation began in March, 1992.

The official said Khmer Rouge guerrillas were suspected of being responsible for the attack.

The Bulgarians came under mortar and small arms fire at the village of Phum Preak in Kompong Speu province Friday night, said the official, who asked not to be identified.

The Bulgarian unit asked for medical evacuation by helicopter, but the three soldiers died before it arrived, he said.
